Our Plush Journey: How I Make Plushies and Why I Hate Them

Hi everyone! I always get questions about making plushies and thought it would be fun to make a small blogpost on how I go about it!

Plushie making is a very different process from making stickers and keychains, mostly because it is a 3D object that is made from scratch, as opposed to printing images on various items. When ordering a sample from a manufacturer, I provide the front, side and back mock ups of the plushie as shown below:

Depending on the complexity of the design, I might provide more specifications to give my manufacturer a better idea of the exact vision I have!

However, as the images provided are 2D, it is still challenging for a manufacturer to create a sample that looks exactly like the image provided, which leads to multiple revisions and lots of back and forth communication! It's important to find a manufacturer that allows flexibility in changes during the sample making process as plush making is pretty pricey.

Here are some revision mockups I sent to my manufacturer in order to better communicate what I want:

Thankfully, as I had already made samples with my manufacturer beforehand, Loafie was generally easy to fix,,, Lily on the other hand.....

Lily was the most difficult plushie to make, mostly because of her fur patterns. The more complex and detailed the design, the harder it gets for manufacturers to get the samples right xd I was incredibly frustrated trying to figure out how to fix Lily as these plushies are all handmade and it was impossible making them as perfect as I wanted them to be ;u; Thankfully, they all came out very cute and so worth the blood, sweat and tears I put into designing and making them! <3

All in all, plushie making is a very tedious and challenging process which requires lots of patience and resilience (both of which I lack and learn about along the way). As a result, it took me many months to get their samples right before I was satisfied with them. Some manufacturers are more cooperative than others, hence, it's really important to find manufacturers you can work well with without compromising the quality of the plushies!

I hope this gives better insights into how I make plushies and why it takes so long to make a plush :>
